Fairbanks, AK – Spotting a whale at close range is a sight many people wait a lifetime for, but coming up close with a majestic creature like the Sperm whale can be an unwelcome experience for Alaska fishermen. On this week's Arctic Science Journeys, we'll hear how the whales made famous in Moby Dick like to feed on sable fish before longliners can haul them aboard.

Fairbanks, AK – The lowlands off South Cushman Street are Fairbanks's unofficial dumping grounds. But the area is also an oasis every spring for thousands of migrating birds. That brings out birders dedicated to seeing waterfowl and shorebirds, despite the trash. KUAC's Libby Casey reports on one man's unusual sanctuary.

Fairbanks, AK – A Delta Junction teacher has been recognized by Disney for her unique and successful work with students. Cindy Aillaud is one of 38 teachers selected this spring from over 100 thousand nominated nationwide for the Disney Hand Award. The award was established in 1989 and honors creative teachers. Her selection includes a 10 thousand dollar prize and trips to California and Florida over the next year. Kuac's Dan Bross reports on Delta's award wining teacher.

Fairbanks, Ak. – For the first time since 1991, dipnetters won't have to pay anything to wet their nets at Chitina. As Kuac's Dan Bross reports, a state law passed 2 years ago, that eliminates a permit fee, goes into effect next week when the popular fishery opens.

Fairbanks, AK – The University of Alaska Fairbanks will have a new Chancellor in July. U-A President Mark Hamilton has tapped Stephen B. Jones for the job. As KUAC's Robert Hannon reports, most of those who met the new administrator liked Jones' combination of business and academic experience.
