Dan has been in public radio news in Alaska since 1993.  He’s worked as a reporter, newscaster and talk show host at stations in McGrath, Valdez and Fairbanks. Dan’s experience includes coverage of a wide range of topics, from wolf control to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and dog mushing. 

He graduated from St. Lawrence University in upstate New York with a degree in fine arts and environmental studies in 1987.  Snow and adventure lured Dan and wife Peggy to Alaska in 1992. The couple and their two kids enjoy cross country skiing, back packing and river trips.

Usibelli Coal Mine

Usibelli Coal Mine is turning 75. The operation in Healy started by Emil Usibelli in 1943, and run by his son, and now grandson, is Alaska’s only operating coal mine. KUAC’s Dan Bross reports.

A judge will decide whether a federal civil rights suit filed against the city of Fairbanks can proceed. Native men, known as the Fairbanks Four allege racial bias driven police misconduct, including coercion of false confessions and fabrication of evidence, lead to their being wrongfully convicted of a 1997 murder. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, the civil suit is the latest development in an unresolved case that continues to haunt the community.

There was a fundraiser in Fairbanks last (Thurs) night for a man whose challenge of federal authority over state waters is headed back to the US Supreme Court. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, John Sturgeon of Anchorage is raising money for what’s expected to settle his long running fight with the National Park Service.
