Climber Jason Harper's Disappearance

By Dan Bross

Fairbanks, AK – Climber Jason Harper's disappearance from the slopes of Mt. Sanford last week was a wake up call to solo mountaineers. Harper was experienced and fit, but that's not always enough on Alaska's high glaciated peaks. His route wasn't that extreme, but the hazards of altitude and crevasses can make any climb challenging and even deadly. The park is trying to fill in the blanks on what happened to Jason Harper, and Park Service Search and Rescue coordinator Pete Dalton joins KUAC's Dan Bross on the phone from Copper Center to share his perspective.
