FIRE INFORMATION 7/08/04

Fairbanks, AK – THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS DRAWN FROM THIS MORNING'S REPORT BY THE INTERAGENCY COORDINATION CENTER:

Boundary Fire The evacuation order was lifted yesterday. The fire still has some potential to threaten homes, so people in the evacuation zone should remain alert just in case. The Steese and Elliot Highways are open.

Yesterday fire crews focused on protecting structures and mopping up along the Steese Highway and in the Poker Flats area. Residents may still see smoke along the highway, especially around milepost 32. The fire is still active around the perimeter. People will continue to see smoke and flare-ups.

The North Star Borough is hosting a public meeting at 8:30 pm at the Hilltop Truck Stop and Caf . The Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Management Team will provide an update on the Boundary Fire.

Wolf Creek Fire Fireline continues to hold the fire on the ridge above Chena Hot Springs Resort. Structure protection is a priority as crews continue to mop up around homes. The North and West Fork regions of the fire and the area south of the Chena River are being monitored; there was little fire activity in these areas yesterday.

Fire managers will hold another meeting tonight to update the public on the Wolf Creek Fire. The meeting will be held at 7:00 pm at the Chena Hot Springs Resort.

Kenai River Trail Fire Firefighters finished a scratch line around most of the perimeter yesterday. The perimeter will be secure by this evening. The river canyon was opened to boats this morning. The Skilak Loop Road is closed between Jim's Landing and the Hidden Lake Campground, but both facilities are open.
