Preliminary Numbers Show Lower Voter Turnout in Interior, Statewide Than 2010

Voter turnout was down in Tuesday’s election, both here in the Interior and statewide.

About 42 percent of registered voters in the Interior showed up at the polls in Tuesday’s midterm election, according to unofficial vote totals posted to the state Elections Division website.

A precinct-by-precinct analysis shows that turnout is about 20 percent lower than the 2010 midterm election.

Elections Division Director Gail Fenumiai says the statewide turnout Tuesday also was lower than 2010’s.

“Well, statewide we’re at 44.84 percent, she said. “And that is lower than the 2010 midterm election, which I believe was around 52 percent.”

Fenumiai says that’s a preliminary number that she expects will rise once the division tallies absentee and questioned ballots.

“Yeah, I think it’ll get up into the 50-percent range, just guessing on how many could possibly – how many ballots we might possibly be out there to count,” she said.

If so, that would mean about 2 percent fewer voters went to the polls statewide in 2014, compared with 2010.
