Fairbanks voters ousted incumbent City Councilman Jonathan Bagwill Tuesday and elected in his place challenger Kathryn Ottersten, according to unofficial vote tallies. Voters also re-elected City Councilwoman June Rogers to what will be her first full term. And they elected newcomer Shoshana Kun to the seat formerly occupied by Joy Huntington, who declined to run for re-election.

The Fairbanks City Council on Monday approved bonuses to help recruit and retain police officers and dispatchers.

Hundreds of local government officials from around the state are in Anchorage this week for the Alaska Municipal League’s annual local-government conference. At the top of their agenda is finding ways to deal with cuts in state funding that in turn have forced the municipalities to reduce services and raise local taxes.

The Fairbanks City Council last night gave initial approval to a measure that would ask Fairbanks voters to consider an increase in property taxes to fill a gap in the city’s budget caused by a cutback in state funding.

The Fairbanks City Council tonight will consider final approval of the city budget for the coming year.

The operating budget calls for $35.6 million in general fund spending and $36.4 million in revenue.
