Fairbanks North Star Borough School District

  • The Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce hosted speakers supporting and opposing the ballot measure on the May 7th special election for the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Speaking in favor of the proposition are representatives of the ad hoc group, Golden Heart Strong. Co-chairs Morgan Dulian, a parent at Pearl Creek School and Lael Oldmixon, a former chair of the Chamber's Education and Workforce committee made the presentation.

  • Groups supporting and opposing Proposition A in Fairbanks North Star Borough’s upcoming special election gave arguments to the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The election, scheduled for May 7th, would allow the borough to increase the collection of tax revenue by $10 million to pay for public schools.
  • The president of the Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board is apologizing for comments she made about legislators who did not vote to override the governor’s veto of an education bill. A majority of the school board has called a special meeting tonight to discuss the issue in private.
  • Just after midnight this morning, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board voted to close Ben Eielson Junior/Senior High School. They postponed voting on the closure of other schools to instead focus on the budget. The board resumes meeting tonight.

  • Teachers and school support staff in Fairbanks are still working without union contracts. Negotiations between the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District with both the Fairbanks Education Association, FEA, and the Education Support Staff Association, ESSA have stalled and neutral, third-party negotiator will try to move talks forward.
  • The Fairbanks Board of Education is asking for public opinion about hiring a new superintendent. They want parents and community members to take on online survey in the next three weeks.
