A 23-car pileup closed a slippery stretch of the Johansen Expressway for nearly three hours Tuesday afternoon. Only minor injuries were reported, but the chain-reaction wrecks closed the two westbound lanes between Peger Road and University Avenue – right after four state Department of Transportation snowplows had passed through the area.

Parks Highway communities around Denali National Park are celebrating today’s grand opening of the area’s first full-service grocery store. The Three Bears Grocery in Healy is the Alaska-based company’s 10th store in the state.

Unseasonably warm and wet weather last month laid down a coating of hard-to-remove all around the Interior. That’s kept the crews that remove snow and ice from roads and runways busy.


Updated: A 20-year-old Fort Wainwright soldier in listed in critical condition this morning at an Anchorage hospital where he’s being treated for injuries he sustained after being struck by a pickup in the parking lot of a roadhouse 50 miles south of Fairbanks.


10 a.m. update: The state Transportation Department has closed a portion of the Richardson Highway around Paxson, due to snowfall and drifts in the roadway. Traffic is being halted just south of Fort Greely until the roadway is cleared.
