Assembly to Host Air Quality Town Hall

Fairbanks, AK- The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly will host a town hall meeting Wednesday regarding Air Quality in the Borough.

Assemblyman John Davies is helping organize the meeting. It comes after area voters rejected an initiative that restricted local regulation of clean air standards in October.

“It’s not like a hearing on an ordinance, so we’re not actually putting out ‘here’s what we’re going to do,’" Davies explains. "It’s more like ‘please come down and tell us what you think we should do.’”

Davies says member want to understand what assembly members are trying to understand how best to work with area residents regarding air quality.

“Well I think most of the people I am hearing from are people that really think pollution is getting worse and not better," he says. "That the programs that we have had in place probably are helping to keep it from getting worse, but aren’t really solving the problem and so they’re concerned that we need to do more in order to improve the air quality and the air quality is a really serious issue.”

According to the agenda, the Borough Attorney will make a presentation. Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board President Heidi Hass will deliver a report regarding comments and concerns raised during public testimony to the school board.

Citizens are invited to comment. The meeting begins at 7 pm in the Borough Assembly chambers.
