Fairbanks City Council meeting starts earlier

Tonight’s Fairbanks City Council meeting will start a half-hour earlier than before. Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:30. The Council passed an ordinance at it’s August 20th meeting to move both the citizens’ comments time and the council members’ comments ahead of the regular business of the council.

After ceremonies to start the meeting, the Citizens’ Comments section will be open for about an hour. Residents can make comments on any item not up for public hearing for up to three minutes, and the comment period will end no later than 7:30 p.m.

Council members June Rogers and Jerry Cleworth sponsored the ordinance to better serve citizens who formerly waited until the end of council business … often until 10 p.m. or later, to make their comments.  The format is similar to the structure of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly meetings.

Moving Council Comments ahead of other business gives members a chance to quickly address questions residents may have raised during their comment period.
