The University of Alaska Fairbanks is keeping options open for its sports teams to compete against other schools this winter. Speaking during a Friday press conference UAF chancellor Dan White said that given a choice of whether or not to compete in the upcoming Great Northwest Athletic Conference basketball season, the Nanooks opted in.

UAF is one of 4 GNAC (JEE-nak) schools that opted in, with the 6 others, including the University of Alaska Anchorage deciding to pull the plug on the 2021 basketball season. White said the season will be very different, including no fans at games.

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association has given teams until tomorrow (Tues) to decide whether to opt in for an abbreviated season beginning in January. White said UAF intends to leave the option open for hockey and UAF’s other winter sports, including volleyball and skiing as decisions about them have to be made.
UAF’s rifle team is already competing, and on the road in Tennessee and Mississippi through the 20th, after which they will return to Fairbanks until the NCAA Championships in March. The Nanooks rifle team is scheduled to make their Fairbanks debut against Texas Christian University January 16th at the UAF Patty Center
