Across Alaska internet users are being offered $75-per-month discounts as pandemic relief. The subsidy on internet service is available for low-income households or those who lost money in the pandemic.


Fairbanks North Star Borough

Money from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security or CARES Act must be spent by December 31. The Fairbanks North Star Borough has been disbursing its share to local businesses.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough set up grant programs to disburse $15,000 to about 600 businesses. But only 200 have applied. An ordinance before the Borough Assembly this week will expand the opportunities.

Rent and Mortgage Relief Comes to Interior

About 8,000 households have applied for rent or mortgage relief from pandemic-related economic trouble. The Alaska Housing Finance Corporation took applications through the month of June and has started paying out grants to keep people in their homes.

Representatives from the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital Foundation appealed for CARES money from the Borough Assembly at its meeting last night. And the Assembly changed an ordinance to add more money to reimburse health providers for pandemic expenses.


Borough Readies CARES Money for Give-Away

Almost 25 million dollars from the federal Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) is to be distributed to Interior businesses and individuals by the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Tonight (Thursday) the borough assembly will vote on an ordinance to approve the pass-through money. Money should get to locals in August.

UA Receives CARES Funds

The University of Alaska has received over ten million dollars in federal CARES Act coronavirus response funds. The most recent tranche is $7,900,000, and UA spokesperson Robbie Graham says more than half of that has gone to students. Graham says the amount of money a student received was based on their most recent Free Application For Federal Student Aid or FAFSA.
