The Central Recycling Facility in Fairbanks is slowly opening up to take plastic and paper after a two-month closure.

Recycling Coordinator Sean Huntington is calling last week a “soft” opening, without a formal announcement. But people found out anyway.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough replaced all the old fluorescent tubes at the Central Recycling Facility Monday with much more-efficient LED lighting. It’s one of several energy-efficiency efforts the borough has undertaken this year that will save taxpayers nearly a million dollars in the coming years.

Since it opened nearly six months ago, the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s Central Recycling Facility has kept more than 367 tons of materials from being dumped into landfill. The recycling manager says he and his partner organizations would like to expand the program, but he says staff will focus on an making the operation more efficient and customer-friendly.


Fairbanks Rescue Mission

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly on Thursday approved an ordinance that renames the borough Recycling Commission and broadens its scope. The new advisory panel would be rebranded as the Sustainability Commission, and the new name would reflect its increased mission to include promoting environmentally cleaner practices, renewable energy and food security.
