Fort Wainwright's Birch Hill Alpine ski tubing area will not be open to the general public this winter. The popular is venue is scheduled ti open November 27, but Post Community Recreation Officer Dan Cain says Ft. WW remains in "Mission Essential" status, and that limits outside access.


The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks has decided to go virtual with races scheduled through the end of the year. Club President Chris Puchner says the move, which will provide skiers the opportunity to time themselves on a groomed and marked course at the Birch Hill Ski Center, offers a low risk racing alternative.

Gov. Mike Dunleavy's new Emergency Declaration takes effect today. It will expire December 15, but could be extended by the legilature. It  He also issued a series of health orders yesterday. Municipalities around the state, including the Fairbanks North Star Borough are following with their own emergency orders.

The mayors of Delta Junction and the Denali Borough announced new precautions Thursday in response to the growing number of COVID-19 cases locally and statewide – and the governor’s declaration of a covid emergency.

The Denali Borough Assembly will consider an ordinance Wednesday to extend its declaration of a COVID-19 disaster emergency. The measure would allow the borough to continue its COVID testing program and other responses to the pandemic – at least, through the end of the year.

Fort Greely officials are reminding people who work or live on post to contact the Fort Wainwright Public Health office if they’ve been notified by the school district that they or their child may have been exposed to the coronavirus recently.

Alaska is continuing to see high daily new COVID-19 case counts and hospitalizations. The state Department of Health and Social Services announced 405 new Alaska resident COVID-19 cases recorded Monday.

Alaska’s average daily case rate is now 49 per 100,000 people.


FNSB School District

Families and teachers are feeling pressure to return students to classrooms, in spite of the highest COVID-19 case numbers seen since the pandemic started. The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is operating in the “Red Operational Zone,” with most students learning from home. But the school board is asking for more options.


Five Delta Junction-area residents who attended a recent birthday party have contracted COVID-19. All five report having minor symptoms, and they’ve all been asked to isolate.
