The eastern Interior town of Tok has Alaska’s first and only electric-powered school bus. The vehicle has in use since mid-October, and it was put to the test earlier this month, when it transported students without any problem after the temperature had dropped to 35 below.

Electric vehicles are increasingly popular in the United States and in Alaska’s coastal areas, but how does the technology perform in the Interior’s extreme winters? KUAC’s Dan Bross talked with two Interior EV owners about their experiences.

Electric Car Workshop Next Week

There are about 500 electric vehicles in Alaska. The landscape is improving for running electric cars cheaply and for long distances. But there are still barriers to overcome. Fairbanks scientists are inviting manufacturers, utility regulators, transportation analysts and just general motorheads to a two-day virtual workshop. The workshop is 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16 and Wednesday, June 17.
