The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly on Thursday approved an ordinance that renames the borough Recycling Commission and broadens its scope. The new advisory panel would be rebranded as the Sustainability Commission, and the new name would reflect its increased mission to include promoting environmentally cleaner practices, renewable energy and food security.

Fairbanks, North Pole Advance in Energy Prize Contest

Fairbanks, AK - Fairbanks and North Pole are among 50 communities competing for a $5 million dollar prize as part of a national energy competition hosted by Georgetown University.  Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Luke Hopkins says the communities have been working on an eighteen-page application since 2013.  It outlines a plan to reduce energy consumption by at least a required 12 percent. “We are now able to start the competition and so from here on out, this is where we will be showing our data that we submit to Georgetown," Hopkins explained.

Alaska rates near the bottom in a nationwide survey on how states are improving energy-efficiency programs. But a state energy official says the survey may not be giving Alaska enough credit for the programs it has put in place in recent years.
