Fairbanks North Star borough Assembly

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly approved a measure that allows the area school district to keep $800,000 that it would’ve been required to give back to the borough. Assembly members say the action was a small step toward helping the district cope with personnel and program cuts that district officials have proposed to deal with an $11 million state funding shortfall.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly has unanimously approved an ordinance to regulate marijuana use. Assembly member John Davies says the intent is to clarify the evolving state law legalizing recreational marijuana.

“Clearly, what we’re trying to do is to keep the peace by having clear rules, so the referee knows when to blow the while and when not to blow the whistle,” Davies said.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly passed a sweeping air-quality ordinance Thursday night that supporters hope will finally begin to clean up Fairbanks’s wintertime air pollution. Most members agreed the ordinance isn’t perfect, but that it’s a good start.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly got to work Thursday night fine-tuning an ordinance that spells out how the borough’s new air-quality regulations would be enforced. Assembly members tried to balance the need to enforce the regs and reduce air pollution against the need to get the public to go along with them. And to give a break to people who can’t afford to upgrade their heating system.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly held a second, lengthy public hearing Thursday night on an ordinance that would set standards for local air-quality, and policies and penalties to enforce those standards. Many of the comments focused on the health impacts of the ordinance.

Fairbanks, AK - The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly considers an ordinance Thursday during a regular meeting that would allow for the permanent registration of non-commercial vehicles and trailers that are more than eight years old.

Assemblyman Guy Sattley is sponsoring the ordinance. It comes in response to a bill passed by the state legislature last year.

“It would enable people to save a little bit of money on their vehicle registration,” said Sattley.

Municipal leaders from all three local governments gathered for a joint meeting Tuesday night with about 120 citizens to talk about the state’s new marijuana-legalization law. The first-of-its-kind meeting was held so the leaders could talk amongst themselves, and with the audience, about how they’re going to put the law into practice.

Fairbanks, AK - The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly will introduce a resolution Thursday during their regular meeting in support of a new bike path along the Richardson Highway. The project to connect Salcha and Eielson Air Force Base is in the very early stages of development.

Borough Assembly Voting On Truancy Ordinance Tonight

Jun 12, 2014

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly votes tonight on an ordinance that reworks the school district’s truancy policy. The new policy appoints a truancy officer, and implements penalties that are less strict than state law.

The Fairbanks school district currently adheres to a statewide truancy policy, where parents face a $500 fine, a misdemeanor or court appearance if their children have five or more unexcused absences. Borough assembly Presiding Officer Karl Kassel says that policy is ineffective.
