Fairbanks, AK - The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly spent 15 hours Saturday discussing the next fiscal year’s recommended budget.  It was the second and final session before a revised budget is presented to the public. 

Bus Trouble

Safety concerns have been raised about the bus company that transports Fairbanks North Star Borough District students.  KUAC’s Dan Bross reports.

A new service allows Fairbanks North Star Borough residents to share information that emergency responders can access.  Fairbanks is the first community in Alaska to subscribe to Smart 9-1-1,  a national service that enables dispatchers to access caller submitted profiles.  KUAC’s Dan Bross reports.

A local governmental planning organization that promotes road improvements and other transportation projects around the Fairbanks area is asking for public comment on proposals to expand its boundaries.


Fairbanks, AK - The Fairbanks North Star Borough unveiled a new community action program during a meeting in North Pole on Thursday night.  The program encourages residents to voluntarily refrain from burning wood on days when air quality is poor. 

Borough Considers Public Utility Ordinance Tonight

Fairbanks, AK - The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly will hear public testimony tonight on an ordinance that would create a public natural gas distribution utility.  The utility is championed by Borough Mayor Luke Hopkins.  It has garnered support from five of the Assembly’s nine members.

Fairbanks, AK - Fairbanks North Star Borough voters went to the polls on Tuesday to cast their ballot on issue ranging from the tax cap to air quality.  According to the unofficial results, voters reelected Mayor Luke Hopkins to a second term, but the assumed win didn’t come quickly.  Mayor Hopkins trailed opponent Norm Phillips for over an hour as results trickled in.  The Mayor called the race a nail biter. “Well yeah," he smiles, "when you come in and I’m down by 400 votes and now I’m up by 900, so in that transition of course you wonder what’s going on.”

Fairbanks borough voters consider a ballot proposition in tomorrow’s (Tues) municipal election, that if passed will stop the borough government from regulating heating devices. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, it’s the latest volley in the war over air quality.
