A sucessful Fairbanks housing assistance program has received a second grant from the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority. The $250,000 award to the Fairbanks Rescue Misson will continue the MyPlace Rapid Rehousing Project.

Homeless shelters around Fairbanks are changing some of the ways they do business to prevent spreading the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. That includes screening people for symptoms of COVID-19 and requiring them to maintain six feet of social distancing. But those measures have presented new challenges for the shelters.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough will open its long-awaited Central Recycling Facility Sept 1 in an area just north of the Johansen Expressway.

Fairbanks entrepreneur Bernie Karl says he had to stop collecting plastics at his K&K Recycling facility earlier this month because he can’t find a use for the material right now that makes economic sense. But there are other places around town where people can still drop off some types of plastic – including the Fairbanks Rescue Mission, on the city’s south side.
