The Fairbanks City Council voted Monday to allow consumption of marijuana at authorized cannabis shops in town.

The Fairbanks City Council postponed a final vote Monday on a proposed ordinance that would permit authorized cannabis retail shops in town to offer on-site consumption of marijuana. If approved, Fairbanks would become the first city in Alaska to allow on-site consumption. But as KUAC’s Tim Ellis reports, the council may now consider asking voters to make the decision.

Updated: The Fairbanks City Council convened the first of three work sessions today to consider revisions to a proposed ordinance that would bar discrimination against the LGBTQ community and other groups. Supporters of the measure told Mayor Jim Matherly and City Council members on Monday that they’re angry the council postponed approving the ordinance. They said they were harassed by opponents of the measure during the Dec. 10 public hearing and subjected to threatening and obscene images transmitted through a cellphone by someone at the meeting.

Fairbanks voters ousted incumbent City Councilman Jonathan Bagwill Tuesday and elected in his place challenger Kathryn Ottersten, according to unofficial vote tallies. Voters also re-elected City Councilwoman June Rogers to what will be her first full term. And they elected newcomer Shoshana Kun to the seat formerly occupied by Joy Huntington, who declined to run for re-election.

The Fairbanks City Council on Monday rejected a proposed three-year contract with the Fairbanks Fire Fighters union local. The council voted 4-to-2 against the deal that Mayor Jim Matherly and his chief of staff Mike Meeks had worked out with the union’s negotiating team over the past several months.

After a heated debate, the Fairbanks City Council approved an ordinance Monday that added regulations to the marijuana industry. The amended ordinance maintains the city’s ban on on-site consumption of cannabis. But it would allow more than twice as many retail shops as the original ordinance introduced by Mayor Jim Matherly.
