Welcome to KUAC's presentation of The Best of the Fest. The 2013 Winter Folk Festival took place on February 9th, at Pioneer Park in Fairbanks, Alaska.  Over the next 5 hours we'll  feature the music of 30 bands from Interior Alaska and beyond. We kick off our show with Jean McDermott and Tundra Music students, playing Swedish fiddling tunes.

The Young Dubliners made their debut on Alaska Live with an energetic acoustic set and stories of worldwide travels. Percussionist Dave Ingraham used what he learned from watching an Elvis video and used a guitar case as his drum. This band loves coming up to Alaska and hopefully this will not be the first and last time at the KUAC studios.

Conversation, both about the music and making music, took center stage with Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser & cellist extraordinaire Natalie Haas. This duo keeps the tradition of Scottish & Celtic music fresh & alive with their arrangements, compositions & interpretations. Share in the joy during this Alaska Live.

Seamus Kennedy

Jan 19, 2013

Irish musician & entertainer is at home with traditional tunes as well as on his own. During the Alaska Live session, Kennedy ranged from the touching & tear jerking to the tongue-twister & sing-a-long songs with ease. You can sing along too when you listen in!

"On Thin Ice" is the 9th Army Band's Rock combo. They went all acoustic for this performance and featured their soulful singers, new shiny acoustic guitars and percussion instrument, the cajon. All most all the service members are home for the holidays this year and the band talked about what an honor it is to play each one of them back in the troop return ceremonies. Listen to holiday favorites and a few pop tunes thrown in to truly feature the talent of their female vocalists.

America's Arctic Brass Ensemble, Borealis Brass, played selections from the program they are taking on their second tour to Europe. They'll return to Rome, Italy & beyond with compositions that highlight their top-notch talent. This session was from Nov. 19, 2012.
