perfluorinated compounds

A drinking water sample at Ft. Wainwright has tested positive for perfluorinated compound contamination. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, it’s the first positive test on post, and it’s unclear if it’s indicative of groundwater contamination already effecting three other locations in the Fairbanks-North Pole area.

Groundwater pollution from firefighting foams used at Fairbanks International Airport is drawing increasing concern from neighbors, some of whose wells have tested positive for contamination.  The situation resulted in a big turnout at a public meeting this week (Mon). KUAC’s Dan Bross reports.

Officials with the Air Force and other agencies are asking members of the public to weigh-in on several proposals to provide drinking water to Moose Creek residents who can’t use their wells because of groundwater contamination. The pollution came from Eielson Air Force Base’s use of firefighting foam in years past. On Monday, North Pole City Council members made it clear they believe expanding their municipal water system to Moose Creek is the best alternative.
