Yukon Quest mushers draw numbers before the race start

Whitehorse, YK  - Two Rivers musher Allen Moore will leave the start line first Saturday when the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race kicks off in Whitehorse.

“I like number one,: he said. "Hopefully I wont have to pass anybody for a little while anyway.  In long races, I don’t think it means that much.  It wouldn’t matter if I went last or first or whatever, but it’s good to get number one. I’m happy with it.”

This is the second time Moore will wear bib number one.  In 2012, he left the start line from Fairbanks first. He finished nine days later in second place behind Tok musher Hugh Neff who won that year.

Behind Moore will be Brent Sass wearing bib number two. He said it’s the number he wanted.

“I have a really good dog team and I’m so excited to be back here," he says, "All the competition this year just raises the bar so you really have to keep your stuff together out there. I’m looking forward to it," said Sass.

Sass also wore bib number two in the Quest last year. He was pulled from that race 100 miles from the finish line after he suffered a concussion when he fell from his sled and hit his head.

26 dog teams are signed up for this year’s 32nd Annual Yukon Quest.
