Cash'd Out

Jan 20, 2014
Steve Hormann

Johnny Cash Tribute band, Cash'd Out stays true to the spirit and sound of Johnny Cash and his touring band. Two founding members of the band visited the KUAC studios. Doug Benson, lead vocalist sings the part of Johnny Cash in Cash'd Out and Kevin Manuel plays electric guitar on stage and in this session was behind the acoustic guitar. The duo performed just a handful of The Man in Black songs they know and Doug even threw in one of his own originals.

Country and roots musicians Jeff Kanzler and Todd Grebe are no strangers to the Alaska music scene. They put together their bands from the best Alaska country and bluegrass musicians for this Alaska Live gig plus more tour stops over the holiday break. All originals in this session from two bands.

Sarah Koo took a break from her busy teaching and performance schedule to take part in an Alaska Live session. Teaching and outreach is becoming a larger part of Ms Koo's life. She spoke about an influential cello instructor she is still learning from now as she was when just starting out and how she's been inspired to pass this on to a younger generation.

Andrew Cox

Winnipeg-based band "The Treble" used a unique combination of vocalists and bandmates for this session. Three-part harmonies, keyboard, electric bass and a fiddler that they recruited from the Far North Fiddle Fest made for great energy in the studio. Stories of how the band formed, how and where their original songs were born and spine-tingling performance of these songs mark this Alaska Live.

St. Animal

Patrick Levy

Poetically-laden folk world-infused funk filled the KUAC Alaska Live studios when St. Animal hit the airwaves. St. Animal recently formed but the members are from many popular bands from the Fairbanks music scene both past and present. Many selections feature trumpet accented beats, fiddle chops, electric guitar complete with effects and bass and drums. All original songs written by the band feature St. Animal's musical prowess.

Ukulele Russ is an entertainer at heart with Alaska on his mind when writing songs. Ukulele Russ performs solo often but enjoys having the trio together, Dr. Jones from Talkeetna on percussion and Pat "The Rat" from Anchorage on electric bass. Between the three of them, a gig somewhere along the Parks Highway is just a short trip from home. This session is all original songs performed by Ukulele Russ and The Parks Highway Band.
