Fairbanks, AK - A month of clear, snowless skies and deep cold in Interior Alaska may be coming to an end this weekend. National Weather Service forecaster Dan Hancock says the Fairbanks area will see its first significant snowfall since November 10th beginning Sunday night. “It’s a fairly fast moving pattern, so there will be shots of cloud cover coming in, weather fronts coming in, with periods of snow and then the cloud cover will break up and clear out and it will get chilly, but not as cold as it certainly has been,” says Hancock.
According to the forecast, temperatures could rise to zero degrees, well above the fridgid 20 and 30 below recorded this week. Hancock says a second and possibly a third weather front lining up behind this weekend’s will bring relief to interior residents. “There’s a substantial number of folks here in the Fairbanks area that have been bemoaning the lack of snowfall. It hasn’t been good for skiing let alone snowmachining, so I guess those folks will be happy.”
Snow is expected to fall through Monday night with flurries continue next Tuesday. According to the forecast, the Eastern Interior could see up to three inches.
