Nome, AK – Governor Frank Murkowski has designated much of northwest Alaska as a disaster area, after a voracious fall storm struck the area on October 18th. The storm reportedly brought hurricane-force winds to some areas, causing the KOTZ radio tower in Kotzebue to tilt perilously to one side.
In Nome, waves crashed over the seawall protecting the Front Street business district, causing flooding and washing out a portion of the Nome-Council road to the east of Nome. KUAC's Dan Bross talks with John Handeland, general manager of the Nome Joint Utility System, and an incident commander during the storm.
