Casavant Scratches Due to Illness and Sick Dogs

Emily Schwing

Central, AK - Veteran Musher Normand Casavant scratched from the Yukon Quest Sunday, a day after the race start.  The Whitehorse Musher returned to Central after carrying two dogs in the basket for five or six miles.

Casavant did not run a team in any other races this season.  He says that may have contributed to the problem.  He says he is also sick with shingles, which was causing problems with the nerves in his legs.

He is known as the singing musher, but he said he felt like crying. He did not say whether he would be back for another Yukon Quest in the future.
