A moderate earthquake and dozens of aftershocks rumbled through the eastern Interior Friday afternoon.
The 5.4-magnitude quake occurred around 12:30, centered about a mile north of Salcha, about 30 miles south of Fairbanks at a depth of about 4 miles. Reports of earth movement came from people living from Fairbanks to Tok.
According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, that was followed a few minutes later by a 3.7 quake, then dozens of aftershocks mainly around Salcha and surrounding area.
Four of the quakes were centered within a few miles of the Alaska Pipeline and Pump Station 8. An Alyeska spokesperson said she hadn’t gotten any reports of damage.
Spokesperson Michelle Egan said in text Friday afternoon that Alyeska has a seismic-monitoring system that notified the company of the earthquake. She says crews checked parts of the pipeline system that may have been affected, but they their initial indication is that there is no immediate threat or impact to the pipeline.
An Alaska State Troopers spokesperson said the agency hadn’t gotten any reports of damage or injuries as of Friday afternoon.
