Dalton Disaster

Department of Transportation

Governor Bill Walker has declared a disaster in response to flooding that’s making the far northern end of the Dalton Highway impassable. The road used to supply the Prudhoe Bay oil field has been closed south of Deadhorse since Sunday, as an expanding area of overflow from the Sag River, and recent blizzard conditions have hampered Department of Transportation crews trying to channel water away from the highway. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, the disaster declaration will amp up efforts to open the road.

Dan has been in public radio news in Alaska since 1993. He’s worked as a reporter, newscaster and talk show host at stations in McGrath, Valdez and Fairbanks. Dan’s experience includes coverage of a wide range of topics, from wolf control to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and dog mushing.
