The level of emissions regulation in the Fairbanks area hinges on how the Environmental Protection Agency classifies local air quality. The area is currently designated a moderate non-attainment area for fine particulate pollution, but could be reclassified as serious, due to continued poor wintertime air related to wood smoke in the North Pole area. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, its unclear if Fairbanks will be included in an expected more stringent regulatory designation.
