Army Works To Reduce Soldier Suicides

US Army Alaska

Changes are in the works at Ft. Wainwright, aimed at reducing an unusually high number of soldier suicides. According to the Army, the deaths of 8 Fairbanks based soldiers in 2019 remain “under investigation”, and another 11 are confirmed to have taken their own lives in the previous 5 years. The suicide deaths drew the attention of Alaska Congressman Don Young last spring, prompting an inquiry and recent report. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, Army leaders held a press conference this week (Nov 5) to address some of the report’s findings, and efforts to address them.

Dan has been in public radio news in Alaska since 1993. He’s worked as a reporter, newscaster and talk show host at stations in McGrath, Valdez and Fairbanks. Dan’s experience includes coverage of a wide range of topics, from wolf control to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and dog mushing.
