GVEA Names John Burns CEO

Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce

Golden Valley Electric Association has a new president and Chief Executive Officer. John Burns took over the top executive job effective May 1, according to a news release posted yesterday to the Golden Valley website.

Burns was the Fairbanks-based utility’s vice president and general counsel before its board of directors selected him for the position. He replaces Cory Borgeson, who retired in March.

Board members named Burns as interim president and CEO while they were recruiting for the top position.

Burns is a lifelong Alaska and graduate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He’s worked as an attorney for nearly 30 years, and he served as state Attorney General under Governor Sean Parnell. He also chaired the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation.

Burns says he’s honored that the board chose for the position. The Golden Valley news release says the utility considered 60 applications from candidates around Alaska and nationwide before selecting Burns in a Thursday special meeting.

Tim has worked in the news business for over three decades, mainly as a newspaper reporter and editor in southern Arizona. Tim first came to Alaska with his family in 1967, and grew up in Delta Junction before emigrating to the Lower 48 in 1977 to get a college education and see the world.
