Solie Outpolls Carter for GVEA District 3 Board Seat; Incumbents Messier, DeLong Re-elected

Golden Valley Electric Association members in the Fairbanks area elected businessman Rick Solie to the GVEA board of directors in a hotly contested election against attorney Alison Carter.

According to a news release on the utility’s website, Solie got 53 percent of the votes that were cast by District 3 voters and validated versus Carter’s 47 percent.

The two candidates were seeking election to the seat vacated by retiring long board member Rick Schikora.

Golden Valley members in Districts 1 and 2 re-elected incumbents David Messier and board Chair Tom DeLong.

Messier drew 64 percent of District 1 votes versus challenger Aren Gunderson’s 36 percent.

DeLong defeated two challengers by drawing 54 percent of the votes cast in District 2, outpolling Savannah Fletcher, who got 32 percent, and Heidi Titchenal, who got 14 percent.

Board members will review the election results and elect new officers in their June 22nd meeting. 

District 1:

  • Aren Gunderson: 456 votes / 36%
  • David Messier: 814 votes / 64%

District 2:

  • Tom DeLong: 688 votes / 54%
  • Savanah Fletcher: 403 votes / 32%
  • Heidi Titchenal: 183 votes / 14%

District 3:

  • Alison Carter: 563 votes / 47%
  • Rick Solie: 638 votes / 53%
