A man who went missing in Fairbanks earlier this winter has been found dead. City of Fairbanks spokesperson Teal Soden says 54-year-old Steven Hjelm’s body was discovered in an unlocked storage unit by a resident of a Kellum Street apartment complex on Thursday, March 25th.

“Sadly, Steven was found deceased. There is no foul play suspected at this time, and there’s no indication that it is related to any other missing persons case. We will be releasing the cause of death after the ME has determined it. Later next week probably."

Hjelm, of Stevens Village was living in Fairbanks with local family when he went missing January 9th.

“They heard from him later that evening, when he had called them from a local establishment, and then they did not hear from him again.“

Soden says city police are talking with Hjelm’s family in anticipation of releasing additional information.

Soden says the Fairbanks Police Department would like to thank all the volunteers in the community who helped in the search for Mr. Hjelm and those who provide information regarding any missing persons cases. The department thanked the family for maintaining regular contact with over the last few months during the investigation.
