A new report shows that the environmental impact statements for Alaska’s 5 largest hard rock mines, grossly underestimated the number of spills that have resulted from the projects. The Alaska Mining Spills report produced for Earthworks with support from the National Parks Conservation Association, the Brooks Range Council, the Norton Bay Intertribal Watershed Council and the Tanana Chiefs Conference, compares pre-development spill predictions with actual incidents at the Ft. Knox and Pogo mines in the Interior, the Kensington and Greens Creek mines in Southeast and Red Dog mine in Northwest Alaska. KUAC’s Dan Bross reports.
