A lawsuit is challenging the State Department of Transportation’s handling of the Manh Choh Mine ore haul. Mining companies: Kinross and Contango, which together operate what’s known as “The Peak Gold Project”, plan to transport 80-ton loads of ore in double tractor trailers from the new Manh Choh mine at Tetlin, 250 miles along the Alaska, Richardson and Steese Highways to the Ft. Knox mill north of Fairbanks for processing. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, the lawsuit filed by a citizen’s group brings together a range of concerns that have been circulating about the long controversial ore haul plan.
