A Chitina man working in the field near Gulkana is being treated at an Anchorage hospital for serious injuries he sustained Tuesday in a bear attack.

Alaska State Troopers say 61-year-old Allen Dewitt Minish was surveying in a remote area near milepost 117 of the Richardson Highway when he encountered an adult brown bear. According to Trooper report, the bear charged and attacked Minish, inflicting puncture wounds and lacerations to his head.

The bear left the area after a brief attack. Troopers say they got a report of the bear mauling around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Glennallen-based Alaska State Troopers and local fire and rescue personnel located Minish and helped him get to a Trans-Alaska Pipeline access road, where he was picked up and later transported to Providence Medical Center.

A hospital spokesperson says Minish is listed in good condition.

Troopers say they were unable to locate the bear.
