The first flight of Fort Wainwright-based Stryker Brigade soldiers will return Friday from a nine-month tour of duty in Iraq, Syria and Kuwait.
A U.S. Army news release says it will be the largest single flight of soldiers from the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team that will be returning from the theater. And it’ll include soldiers from all the unit’s battalions.
A brief ceremony will be held when the soldiers arrive Friday afternoon. according to the news release.
A USARAK spokesman was unavailable Wednesday afternoon to provide more information.
The soldiers are among some 2,000 who deployed from Fort Wainwright back in September. They were members of seven battalions that included cavalry, infantry, field artillery and engineer units.
The Strykers went sent in as part of a joint task force that officials said would mainly be helping train Iraqi troops, and law-enforcement officers and security officers. Some of the Strykers were assigned to Al-Asad Air Base when it was attacked in January by Iranian militants.
