Fairbanks Police say a man shot by police in June was prepared for violence. FPD held a press conference Thursday to share results of an investigation of the police killing of 21 year old Mathew Stover of Northway, after he opened fire on officers. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, police shared photo and video evidence of the deadly encounter, as well as extensive weaponry Stover had at the scene. The following story contains audio of the shooting.

Alaska State Troopers say they’ve charged several inmates at Fairbanks Correctional Center with rioting and assault for their roles in a disturbance at the jail Thursday that led to a lockdown and street closure.

The Fairbanks Police department remains understaffed, despite a recently approved hiring bonus. Police Chief Eric Jewkes told City Council members this week the substandard pay is driving high turnover and making recruiting difficult. And while a new labor contract is being contested in court, Jewkes says the short-staffed department must deal with a spike in violent crime.

There was a funeral service in the village of Northway today (Fri) for a man shot by police in Fairbanks earlier this month. Twenty one year old Mathew Colton Stover of Northway died in a confrontation with FPD officers in a field next to Fairbanks Correctional Center on June 19th. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, questions remain about Stover’s motivation and what happened with police.
