A hiker was rescued near the Teklanika River west of Healy, after travelling to an abandoned bus made famous by the book and movie: Into the Wild.
According to an Alaska State Trooper dispatch, 26-year-old Gabriel Dias Da Silva of Brazil activated a Garmin InReach SOS device Wednesday afternoon, April 15.
Troopers say a helicopter diverted from another mission and located Dias Da Silva, and transported him to Healy. They say Dias Da Silva was uninjured but had run out of food.
Trooper spokesperson Megan Peters says the man was under the impression that Garmin would be responding, not Alaska State Troopers.
She says speaking Portuguese through a translator, the responding Troopers explained how the SOS response system works.
Peters reminds Alaska backcountry travelers to be knowledgeable about where they are going, have the appropriate outdoor skillsets and gear for their adventure and be prepared for changing conditions and seasons.
