EPA scientists say the death rate in the Fairbanks North Star Borough has fallen because citizens are working to clean the air. That was announced among other progress at an Air Quality presentation in North Pole this week. A community meeting featured panelists from the EPA, the state and the borough, who took questions from the audience.

Fairbanks North Star Borough voters turned over air pollution control to the state last fall in a ballot initiative. Since then, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation has been working to devise a plan for improving air quality. New regulations have been drafted and a Serious State Implementation Plan, or Serious SIP, is up for public comment. Formal hearings were held yesterday.

It’s time to comment on air pollution control plans. The state Department of Environmental Conservation is having public hearings this week on the Implementation Plan for pollution control. There are five different ways to comment.

Last month DEC released a draft of the Serious State Implementation Plan, or Serious SIP. Before finalizing it, the agency wants to hear suggested changes to make it more workable.

State air-quality regulators told local officials and about 50 members of the public Tuesday that the Fairbanks North Star Borough soon will have to impose a new set of tough measures to dramatically reduce fine particulates and other air pollutants in the Fairbanks area. The new measures will affect just about everyone in the area – not just those who burn wood for heat.

Local, state and military officials will meet jointly tonight to talk about a new series of federally mandated air-pollution control measures that will be established in the near future around the Fairbanks area.
