Fairbanks Police Chief Nancy Reeder resigned from her position Monday, after a little more than a year on the job.

The police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis continues to focus attention on racism driven brutality and killings by law enforcement across the country.  As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, the spotlight fell on Fairbanks during a city council meeting this week.

In Alaska, that’s resonated with Alaska Native families who have lost loved ones at the hands of police, including two in Fairbanks. December 24th marks 2 years since a Fairbanks man was fatally shot by local police and Alaska State Troopers, and the deceased man’s family recently filed a wrongful death suit against the city, the state, and the officers involved. KUAC’s Dan Bross reports.

Law enforcement weapons like pepper and bean bag rounds are getting increased attention in light of officer involved shootings. The “less lethal” alternatives to bullets were the subject of a Fairbanks city council work session this week. KUAC’s Dan Bross reports.

Eyre family

Christmas Eve will mark one year since 20 year old Cody Eyre was fatally shot by Fairbanks Police and Alaska State Troopers. As KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, Eyre’s family is holding Christmas Eve events to remember Cody, and raise awareness about what they see as law enforcement’s poor handling of a mental health crisis.

Updated: A Fairbanks grand jury has indicted 13 Fairbanks Correctional Center inmates on charges of rioting and criminal mischief related to an August 17th riot at the jail. The inmates took over a part of the jail for about an hour and a half before surrendering after they were tear-gassed by members of two tactical police units that were called in.
