It is budget season for the Fairbanks North Star Borough – the Assembly meets this Thursday to vote on a spending plan. But citizens are expected to weigh in as well. Borough Mayor Bryce Ward has posted a tool online where citizens can show how they would spend taxpayer dollars.

The state will no longer share federal trail money with Alaska communities. The Recreational Trails Program provides about one point 5 million dollars to Alaska annually, money which has been split between state park and community projects, but as KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, the funding is being re-focused.

A Million for Mary Siah

A million dollars for helping the Mary Siah Recreation Center get through the next five years was passed last night by the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly. Bids for the repair job go out in a few months and work will probably start in the fall.


Elected Leaders of both the Fairbanks North Star Borough and City of Fairbanks said Wednesday that they and their staffs are studying how they'll deal with what Gov. Mike Dunleavy's calls “massive” funding cuts to municipalities contained in his proposed budget.

Grappling with the borough’s building repair backlog, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly last night passed a requirement that the mayor put   maintenance money in the budget each year. Borough staff estimates the schools, recreation centers, libraries and offices owned by the borough have millions of dollars-worth of repairs pending.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough replaced all the old fluorescent tubes at the Central Recycling Facility Monday with much more-efficient LED lighting. It’s one of several energy-efficiency efforts the borough has undertaken this year that will save taxpayers nearly a million dollars in the coming years.

Bryce Ward was elected mayor of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Tuesday. The former North Pole mayor cruised to victory over three opponents by winning more than half of the votes cast for the mayoral candidates, according to unofficial vote totals.

A Fairbanks man whose property was sold by the North Star Borough for failing to pay his taxes, says he’ll legally fight to get his land back. Chris Ripple’s foreclosed on property was among dozens auctioned off by the borough last week, but as KUAC’s Dan Bross reports, Ripple has documents he says exempt his land from property taxes.
